For the past two years, Petersfield has been graced with the booming voice and boundless enthusiasm of our very own Town Crier, Faye! As she marks this special milestone, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights of her incredible journey.
Where's Woolly?
In a delightful twist, a sheep appeared—just like that! Meet Peter S. Field, also known as Woolly, the town’s beloved mascot promoting the wool and craft trade in our charming hometown. Popping up in shop windows all around town, Woolly has played a vital role in supporting local businesses and spreading the word about all the wonderful things Petersfield has to offer. Peter has had a fantastic time discovering the town, and we’ve loved following along! Children especially have enjoyed participating in this. Watch out for Peter as he returns to the town centre again this year!
A Season of Competitions
Faye has proudly represented Petersfield at several prestigious Town Crier competitions, including events in Warwick, Rye, Haslemere, and Dawlish. Competing against some of the finest criers in the country, she has showcased the town’s vibrant spirit and unwavering pride. As the eco-shepherdess, Faye won best dressed consort in Dawlish and again in Rye.
Deputy Town Crier
Martin Johnson was officially appointed as Deputy Town Crier in partnership with the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers.
New Livery (Costume)
Faye chose to invest in a new livery (costume) and has commissioned Jane Smith, the Lady Town Crier of Bognor Regis (pictured in purple/gold), to create it. The design will feature the crossed keys of St. Peter’s and the Hampshire rose, allowing Faye to proudly represent Petersfield and enhance its presence in competitions.
Greetings Card
When Faye officially opened the Artisan Christmas Shop at the Sage and Salt gallery in Petersfield, she and Deputy Town Crier Martin met a talented local illustrator Oliver Stubbs and commissioned this gorgeous card.
Oliver has worked on other local projects, including illustrating the book Gogglehedz written by Katy Sexton MBE about keeping safe in water.
Proclamations Galore!
Over the past year alone, Faye has attended a remarkable 40-50 appointments, bringing her powerful voice and engaging personality to events both near and far. From announcing local celebrations to making proclamations that unite the community, she has been an exceptional ambassador for Petersfield.
A Published Success!
Faye and her deputy, Martin, have now been immortalised in
print in, I Want to Be a Town Crier, by Mike Willett.
This delightful publication captures the essence of their journey and the important role of a town crier. (Take a peek at the book cover—it’s a must-read!) This publication will be available
internationally and includes town criers from all over the world!
Shine Radio Shoutout!
