We manage 18 open spaces in the borough, the vast majority of which we own. They cover a variety of types of opportunities for recreation.
We have nature reserves, extensive walks, traditional recreation grounds, sports pitches, common areas in estates and several playgrounds. Each requires different management: the careful mowing/marking/feeding & weeding of a sports pitch; the grass mowing of a ‘wilder’ environment; the regular ‘pulling’ of invasive weeds in a nature reserve; the repairing and replacing of playground equipment. And, of course, the regular emptying of 75 litter bins.
The ‘jewel in the crown’ locally is, of course, the Heath and Pond.
The Heath is of importance in the South of England: one of the few surviving lowland heaths and the most important cemetery of Bronze Age mound and round barrows.
